What Sets Us Apart
Our personal philosophy is based on the belief that orthodontic treatment should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We see far too many adults returning for their second or even third round of orthodontics. One-time orthodontics is only possible if the physiology of the temporomandibular joints (chewing and biting) is considered along with the cosmetic appearance of the teeth. A good way to look at it is that a properly functioning bite will always look good, but good-looking teeth are not always properly functioning. A comprehensive orthodontic approach is an absolute requirement to accomplish this goal. Unfortunately, not all orthodontists practice comprehensive orthodontics.
We use mounted study models, an integral part of comprehensive orthodontics, in treatment planning. Mounted study models are casts of the teeth mounted on a bite simulator in place of two separate casts held by hand. The bite simulatormounted casts allow evaluation of the teeth in relation to the TM joints as the patient truly bites. While this is a complex step that many orthodontists skip, it is an important step in minimizing the risk of orthodontic-induced TMJ problems. If you are seeking multiple opinions, this is a question you may want to ask other providers you consult. Ask, do you mount your study models?
We believe in continuing education and fortunately the dental profession continues to invest in the expansion of our knowledge base. Continuing education is one of the most exciting parts of our profession. After Dr. Nelson completed his orthodontic residency in 1984, he enrolled in the two-year Roth/Williams Institute for Advanced Orthodontic Education program. Since that time he has continued to attend, participate in and instruct in all phases of orthodontic continuing education programs. Dr. Nelson & Dr. Briggs are active members of numerous prestigious study clubs.
We make use of new technology as it is introduced. We were the first orthodontic office in Austin, and still one of the few, to offer digital records. Digital records are important in that they are portable and they offer the lowest possible exposure to radiation. We use computer terminals at each treatment unit, which allows real-time assessment of progress. We offer other forms of state-of-the-art technology to enhance our patients interaction with our practice. For example, via our website we provide private and secure access for our patients to be able to see their account status, make payments, review and confirm their appointment time, and play their Invisalign treatment movie.
Technological advances are not only in computers. Orthodontics is in a technological revolution with the introduction of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and self-ligating brackets. We are one of the few practices using self-ligating brackets, and one of the very few using TADs. These advances reduce normal treatment time by over 30%, are more comfortable, require fewer appointments and create a better final product.
Dental care in general and orthodontic care in particular, has evolved into a multi-disciplinary approach to provide the utmost in care. We have invested considerable time in developing a network of care providers to coordinate all required care. This includes, but is not limited to, cosmetic dentistry, periodontal care, restorative dentistry, pediatric ENT, oral surgeons, family dentists and physicians. The team approach offers our patients and parents less confusion and better coordination.
Our staff is the greatest asset and the number one reason for our success. Patients and parents are continually commenting on how wonderful our team is. They are all highly experienced and specially trained dental professionals dedicated to giving you the absolute best care. They also contribute to making our patients' experience as pleasant as possible with convenient scheduling, insurance inquiries, and after-hours care. They regularly attend continuing education classes as well.
